Friends warned that downtown can get a bit crazy. We imagined this to be true. Last weekend we went downtown for the parade that kicks off Fur Rondy, a celebration the week before the start of the Iditarod. It took twice as long to get through downtown, it was hard to find parking, and then we had to fight 40 mile per hour winds and snow covered sidewalks. We decided to avoid that this weekend as the vcrowds were sure to be larger.
Thankfully, we were told the scoop on a more quiet place to watch the sleds race by. We went to a local park which had a good view and plenty of space for the boys to play. Our neighbor was there with her 5 year old and 2 year old boys, so Liam spent much of his time climbing a little hill and sliding down on his belly with Ryan and Matt. Ben started off in the carrier, but seemed miserable. I took him out thinking he'd be happier, but he generally stayed miserable. I did see a friend from Mom's club, and Ben serenaded her 15 month old by tilting his head to the side and singing "Moon, Moon, Moon" by Laurie Berkner to her. After that, he went back to being miserable. We stayed maybe 45 minutes and by the time we got back in the car, Ben's fingers were red and dangerously cold. Our lows are still well into the negative degrees (as low as negative 10 at night) and the sun hadn't been up long enough for it to warm to the high of 18 degrees that we saw yesterday.
5 time champion Lance Mackey racing by. He got so many cheers that he turned around so his back was to the front of the sled to wave to the crowd. This might sound easy, but most mushers were falling off the sled as they rounded the curve after the footbridge, so this was quite impressive.

Mike was going to take the kids but chickened out. We have every year but we didn't this year. He took them out twice for the Rondy and Teddy complained the whole time. Me cold. Me hurt.
How fun is that? I think I would have frozen in two seconds! lol!
